Middle Rogue near Gold Hill & Grants Pass, Oregon
Season: Late July through September 30th
Fall Kings are the largest run of salmon on the Rogue both in size and numbers. The drag peeling runs of a fish over 30 pounds, and sometimes even 40 pounds, is hard to beat when it comes to getting your heart racing. The Rogue also produces a few true giants each year, and in 2002 a 71.5 pounder was caught setting a fly fishing world record.
Starting at the end of July we transition from Springers to their fall counterparts and move downstream near the town of Gold Hill, and a little later, Grants Pass. Fall Kings tend to be more aggressive than Springers, so there is often more action during the trip. The run also overlaps with Summer Steelhead, so there is an excellent opportunity to catch both species, and we do combo trips for both.
The Rogue’s run of Fall Kings is extremely healthy, and all wild. As a result anglers are able to keep 2 adult fish, and up to 5 jacks (salmon under 24 inches) a day. We target them back-bouncing both plugs and cured eggs.
